Personalized jewelry is any piece that's customized with design elements that you choose, including birthstones, initials, symbols, and metal color. When you personalize a piece of jewelry for someone, you're telling her unique story in a way that's deeply meaningful.

What type of jewelry should I choose?
The piece of jewelry you decide to personalize is a matter of preference. Take a hint from the jewelry she usually wears -- mostly necklaces? Rings? If she's active with her hands, a necklace or earrings might be the best option, as they're less likely to get caught on something. Remember that both necklaces and bracelets can be altered to include more birthstones or initials to mark life's milestones.

When designing a piece of jewelry, consider the size of the birthstones you want to include. Grand (6mm) stones are great for a bold pop of color; Classic (4mm) stones can create a more understated look.
I'm designing a piece with several different birthstones. How do I arrange them?
Any way you like! Here are some suggestions for designing multiple-birthstone jewelry:
• Arrange them by birth order, from oldest to youngest. This is an especially good option if you're designing a bracelet or necklace, which can be altered to include more stones as her family grows.
• Arrange by month order, from January to December. Sometimes it's easier to remember birthdays that way! (And it's fine to use a single birthstone to represent multiple birthdays in one month.)
• For a grandmother's gift, group the birthstones by family. Try neutral accent stones like Diamond, White Topaz, or Moonstone in between each group.
• Alternate birthstones with each child's initial; you can arrange them by birth order or alphabetical order of the initials.
• Create a rainbow effect by arranging the stones using the ROY G. BIV formula (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet).
• Alternate birthstones by how light/dark they are. (We suggest anchoring the darkest stone in the center.)
• Let them be random! Arrange the stones in any way that's visually pleasing.

All of HAVERHILL's personalized jewelry is crafted in solid 14k gold, so color is simply a matter of preference. Yellow gold is the most popular choice, but some women strongly prefer white gold. Take a hint from the jewelry she currently wears -- is it mostly gold or white/silver? You generally can't go wrong by matching the color of her wedding and/or engagement ring.
