How to Travel with Jewelry
Whether we're driving across state or jetting around the world, we naturally want to bring our jewelry along. Traveling with jewelry helps us accessorize for any occasion, and sentimental pieces connect us to loved ones at home.
Of course, there are things to consider: What's the best way to travel with jewelry? What pieces should I bring? How should I store my jewelry? How do I care for my pieces when away from home? Keep reading for tips on the best way to travel with jewelry – selecting, wearing, and caring for it, wherever your travels take you.
• What are the essential, everyday pieces that you always wear? Perhaps a wedding ring, mother's ring, or cross pendant? (Jewelry that stays on is much less likely to get lost.)
• What are your travel plans? If you'll be dining at upscale restaurants in major cities, you'll want more jewelry options than if you're heading to a rustic mountain retreat.
• If you'll be in a large city, or on public transit, bring understated pieces that won't attract attention.
• For peace of mind, keep irreplaceable heirlooms at home.
• Be sure to pack your jewelry in a pouch, travel case, or roll to keep it free from scratches and easy to find in your luggage. (It may be tempting to store jewelry in a clear plastic bag, tucked into the pocket of your suitcase, but it'll be much harder to locate when you unpack, and easier to overlook when you're heading home.)
• Bringing just an extra bracelet or two? Tuck them into the soft cloth pouch your HAVERHILL jewelry came in, and place the pouch in your toiletry case.
• If you're bringing more jewelry, place it in a travel case or roll. Both types of storage offer individual compartments to keep pieces from getting tangled.
Jewelry adds color and flair to your vacation look.
• Be sure to pack a small polishing cloth and wipe down your jewelry each evening to remove any sunscreen, lotion, or repellent that could temporarily dull its shine. (For a more thorough clean, pack a child's toothbrush and brush your jewelry gently, then rinse well.)
• Bear in mind that swimming in cold water can make your fingers shrink a bit, which will loosen the fit of any rings you're wearing. Make sure your rings fit snugly, or leave them in the hotel safe while you're at the beach.
* The only exception? Turquoise, which can absorb water as well as the chemicals in lotions and creams, causing its color to change. We recommend not wearing this gem in the water, and putting it on only after you've applied sunscreens, lotions, or perfumes.
Wearing jewelry on our travels can help us feel stylish, comfortable, and connected to home, even when we're miles away. Select and store your pieces with care, and they'll add color and flair to your vacation look. Bon voyage!
