Nantucket Blue Topaz’s meaning, styling, and care

The Meaning of Nantucket Blue Topaz

Nantucket Blue Topaz is a brilliant glacial blue, making it an ideal wintery gift for December birthdays. This calming blue stone is said to inspire serenity, inner peace and clear communications. Perhaps because of its clarity, this semi precious gemstone is said to promote truth and forgiveness, heighten your ability to communicate, and restore calm.

Nantucket Blue Topaz - Gemstone Knowledge

The Nantucket (or Swiss) Blue Topaz stones HAVERHILL uses are heat treated to enhance their color. This bright blue color rarely occurs in natural form, and so the practice of heat treating colorless topaz to get the blue color is common. Topaz is mined in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Nigeria, China, Australia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Scotland, Tasmania, Ireland and the U.S.

Caring for your Nantucket Blue Topaz Jewelry

Nantucket Blue Topaz is rated 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning it is durable and appropriate for everyday wear, with a little caution. In 1822 Friedrich Mohs created this scale to rate gemstones from 1 (softest) to 10 (exceptionally hard), based on their ability to withstand scratches. Nantucket Blue Topaz can be scratched by gemstones which are harder on the Mohs Scale such as Rubies, Emeralds, Sapphires, and Diamonds. Store your Nantucket Blue Topaz jewelry in your jewelry pouch or box to keep the gemstone from being scratched by harder stones.

Nantucket Blue Topaz and Aquamarine

These two gemstones are very similar in color. The bottom bracelet, Nantucket Blue Topaz, is more of a Caribbean blue with a very slight hint of green. The Aquamarine braceelt on top is a light blue with a slight gray undertone. With aquamarine, larger stones display more saturation of color.

FAQ

Is it safe to wear Blue Topaz if it has been irradiated?

While it is true that irradiation and heat treatments are used to bring out the blue color in topaz, all companies which treat the gems in this manner are required to be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). These companies are required to store the gemstones post-treatment and monitor them until the residual radiation falls to a safe level, at which point  they are safe for use in jewelry.

Should I only wear Nantucket Blue Topaz if it is my birthstone?

People wear gemstones for many reasons, not just because they are the birthstone for the month they were born. You may choose to wear a stone because you feel a connection to the color, because the traditional meaning resonates with you, or because it reminds you of someone you love like a child, a friend or a loved one who has passed away. Jewelry is extremely personal and you should feel free to wear gemstones that speak to you.

What is the difference between Nantucket Blue Topaz and Aquamarine?

Although similar in appearance, there is definitely a slight difference in the intensity of color of these two gemstones. Nantucket Blue Topaz is a bright blue stone, the color of the Caribbean Sea. Aquamarine is a less intense blue-gray, more like the ocean on a cold winter day. Nantucket Blue Topaz (more commonly known as Swiss Blue Topaz) is slightly harder on the Mohs Hardness scale at an 8 as opposed to the 7.5 rating for Aquamarine. Both stones are hard enough to be a very good choice for jewelry.
