Diamond’s meaning, styling, and care

The meaning of Diamond

A Diamond, in its purest state, is a crystal-clear precious gem prized both for its hardness and brilliance. Its near-indestructability has made it a symbol of strength and everlasting love. Its clarity and radiance signify purity, innocence, and positive energy. The ancients attributed any number of qualities to the Diamond, including protection against thieves, fire, poison, illness, and sorcery.

Associated with the crown chakra, Diamond is believed to strengthen the connection between the mind and body. The ancient Hindus thought that Diamonds strengthened the body, especially the heart and brain. Today, the gem represents good fortune, prosperity, strength, and love. It's the gemstone for the 10th and 60th anniversaries.

Since ancient times, humans have associated gemstones with healing properties and spiritual significance.

Diamond – gemstone knowledge

Diamonds are made of pure carbon, and the stone is the hardest known substance on earth. It's believed that Diamonds were first discovered in India around 6,000 years ago. They've been used for personal adornment since ancient times, valued for their hardness, clarity, and spiritual meanings.

Diamonds display their exceptional light-reflecting properties only when cut and polished. The facets of a cut and polished Diamond act like a prism, producing the rainbow of sparkle the birthstone is famous for. This quality is called the Diamond's "fire."

The name Diamond comes from the Greek word "adamas," meaning "unbreakable." Its extreme hardness made it a symbol of strength, and it was thought to protect the union of married couples. Did you know that the first known Diamond engagement ring dates back to 1477? (Mary of Burgundy was the lucky recipient.) Today Diamonds are by far the most popular stone used in engagement and wedding rings.

Styling tips for Diamonds

Diamond and White Topaz

Diamond and White Topaz, April's two birthstones, are both popular choices for jewelry. They're wonderful accent stones for any other gemstone, and of course look beautiful on their own. On the Mohs hardness scale, Diamond rates a 10 -- it's literally the hardest substance on earth. White Topaz is a hard stone, rating an 8 on the Mohs scale, but it can be scratched by harder gems. Both Diamond and White Topaz are great for everyday wear; just make sure not to strike your White Topaz on any hard surface.

FAQ

What's the difference between Diamonds and White Topaz?

Diamonds are made of pure carbon. White Topaz is a neosilicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine. They're both hard stones, making them suitable for everyday wear. Keep both your Diamond and White Topaz jewelry in its jewelry pouch or box to keep it from scratching other gems (Diamond) or being scratched (White Topaz).

Is Diamond a good-luck stone?

Tradition says that wearing your birthstone is good luck, so if you're an April baby, it's a great choice for jewelry! Diamonds are considered to be a very lucky stone in general, so they make a wonderful gem for everybody. Try pairing it with your birthstone to highlight its color.

Should I wear Diamond only if it’s my birthstone?

People wear gemstones for many reasons, not just because it’s the birthstone for the month they were born. You may choose to wear a stone because you feel a connection to the color, because its traditional meaning resonates with you, or because it reminds you of someone you love, such as a child, friend, or loved one who’s passed away. Jewelry is extremely personal and you should feel free to wear any gemstone that speaks to you.

Are sustainably grown gemstones real?

Sustainably grown precious gems are genuine gemstones grown in a lab from a “seed” and are chemically, physically, and optically identical to naturally mined stones. These lab-grown gemstones have beautiful, consistent color and fewer inclusions than naturally mined stones. They're rated the same hardness on the Mohs scale.
